How to Run a Monthly Cycling Mileage Challenge With Your Riding Crew
Every riding crew already competes — on the town-line sprint, up the last climb, in the coffee-stop debrief. A monthly mileage challenge just gives the competition a scoreboard that outlives the ride.
The basic format
Simplest version: most miles in the calendar month wins. Everyone logs their rides, the leaderboard runs all month, and the crown changes heads at midnight on the 31st. A month is the right length for cyclists — long enough to absorb a bad week of weather, short enough that June’s blowout doesn’t decide August.
Keeping it fair
Raw mileage favors whoever has the most free time, so crews usually tune the race:
- Commuters vs. weekend warriors. Daily commute miles pile up fast. Either embrace it (consistency should win) or run separate weekday and weekend races.
- Mixed disciplines. If half the crew also runs or hits the gym, give each activity its own exchange rate — say a run mile worth three bike miles — so cross-training counts instead of competing with the challenge.
- The handicap month. Let last month’s winner carry a small points tax. Keeps the podium rotating and the trash talk fresh.
What keeps a crew challenge alive
The race has to be visible between rides. A number in a group chat on the 1st is a result; a chart everyone checks on Thursday is a motivator. You want cumulative miles, one line per rider — the sight of a line creeping toward yours is worth more than any training plan for getting you out on a day you’d have skipped.
And logging has to be instant, or the challenge becomes homework and dies by week three.
Run it on IRL Arena
IRL Arena was half-built for this exact use case (the other half was a family challenge). Create an arena, set biking to whatever a mile is worth, drop the invite code in the group chat, and the leaderboard and race chart handle the rest — by week, month, year, or all-time. Log a ride once and it scores in every arena that counts biking. Strava and Garmin auto-import are on the roadmap so rides will eventually score themselves.
Start your crew’s arena — free, and the month is already ticking.
